From the minute the World Trade Center was completed, it became an indelible feature of a skyline which already included the Empire State, Chrysler, and Citicorp buildings. The Twin Towers added height and balance and made the skyline instantly recognizable worldwide. The best views of the towers were from New Jersey or Brooklyn where we could see the Manhattan skyline from a distance. Within the city, because of their staggering height, we could see them from nearly every rooftop, but they were not often visible from the ground.
Like many New Yorkers, I rarely went to the World Trade Center but the towers loomed large in my perception of the city. Regrettably, I took very few photos of the actual skyline. I did however shoot many photos of representations of the skyline as logos on everything from delis to dry cleaners to demolition trucks.
After the 9/11 some businesses kept the towers but added words, ribbons or flags of condolence. Some businesses have retained their former skyline logos and others have created skylines without the towers. I predict that we’ll see a fresh crop of skyline logos when the Freedom Tower is completed. I’ll be keeping my eyes open and will add those to this collection.
